Their reliable operation depends on a wide range of components, including piston seals. Although it is a relatively small component, its importance to the proper functioning of the hydraulic system is crucial.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A piston seal ensures that the pressure side and the non-pressure side of the piston are separated inside the hydraulic cylinder, enabling efficient power transmission without unwanted hydraulic fluid leaks. A properly designed and manufactured seal contributes to higher equipment efficiency, longer hydraulic cylinder service life, and lower operating costs <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Piston seals and their function<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The piston seal is located in a groove on the piston of a hydraulic cylinder and ensures a tight seal between the piston and the inner wall of the cylinder during piston movement. Its main function is to prevent hydraulic fluid from leaking between the individual chambers of the cylinder. This is usually the main working seal of the hydraulic cylinder. It seals the movement at the outer edge of the cylinder.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the seal were not functioning properly, it would lead to reduced efficiency of the hydraulic system, a drop in performance, and, in some cases, an inability to achieve the required force or piston position.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main requirements for piston hydraulic seals include:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>high sealing performance at both low and high pressures,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>minimal friction during movement,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>wear resistance,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>long service life,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>dimensional stability,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Resistance to hydraulic oils and operating fluids.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Design of the mounting groove for the piston seal  <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The installation space for piston seals typically takes the form of a wide groove. For so-called omega seals\u2014sealing elements that most commonly combine PTFE and bronze or NBR\u2014the installation space takes the form of a deep, narrow groove.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When <a href=\"https:\/\/reontech.cz\/en\/services\/seal-design-for-hydraulics\/\">designing<\/a> and manufacturing mounting spaces for piston seals, it is necessary to follow the recommendations that generally apply to the design of sealing elements. In particular <strong>, the surface roughness of the sealing groove<\/strong> must be <strong>Ra \u2264 1.6 \u03bcm and Rt \u2264 6.3 \u03bcm<\/strong>, and prior to installation, it is also necessary to verify that the sealing groove is free of any contaminants and that there are no sharp edges, burrs, or other surface imperfections in the area. It is also necessary to adhere to the recommended size of the lead-in edge in the cylinder. Equally important is <strong>the surface roughness of the cylinder, which should be Ra \u2264 0.3 \u03bcm and Rt \u2264 2.5 \u03bcm<\/strong>. Piston seals can be broadly classified into: <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Single-acting piston seals<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Designed for hydraulic cylinders in which pressure is applied from one side only. They are used, for example, in lifting mechanisms or simple hydraulic drives. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Double-acting piston seals<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They seal in both directions of piston movement. They are standard in most industrial hydraulic cylinders used in production lines, mobile equipment, and construction machinery. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Compact sealing systems<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They consist of several components, such as a sealing ring, a guide element, and a support ring. They provide greater resistance to material extrusion under high pressure. Special types (designed primarily for the mining industry) have a pressure resistance of up to 1,500 bar thanks to this design.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Piston Seals for Hydraulic Cylinders &#8211; Overview of the Most Common Profiles<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are dozens of different piston ring profiles available on the market, which vary by manufacturer and application. The longer, static edge, on the other hand, is more flexible and sensitive to pressure fluctuations.
