For example, we lap the contact surfaces of mechanical seals.
By reprocessing, mechanical seals can achieve a significant extension of their service life and restoration of correct functionality.
The use of trapping brings, among other things, considerable financial savings.
However, this method of machining can also be used on a wide range of other workpieces where there is a requirement for this finishing operation.
We process both piece orders and serial requirements.
General principle of the trapping method
About the technology
Lapping is classified as a finishing machining operation. It can achieve the best quality of machined surfaces of all machining methods.
With very fine lapping, surface roughness up to Ra = 0.02 µm to 0.05 µm and shape accuracy of 0.05 µm to 0.01 µm can be achieved .
It is used wherever it is necessary to achieve tightness of the contact surfaces of two components against penetration of liquids or gases.
It is used, for example, for mechanical seals, gauges, valves of internal combustion engines, cutting parts of tools, threads.
Lapping can also be encountered at bearing points of shafts and sliding bearing spindles or in the manufacture of rolling bearings.
The principle consists in smoothing the surface with free fine abrasive, which is supplied into the space between the tool and the workpiece.
The abrasive is dispersed in oil, kerosene or is part of the lapping paste. The trapping tool induces a cutting motion of the abrasive by its irregular movement in relation to the work surface, thus reducing the surface roughness.
Thanks to this principle, the abrasive grains move along constantly changing paths, thus erasing traces of previous machining.
Before lapping, the workpiece is usually finely ground with an addition of 0.05 mm to 0.03 mm.
