Seal design for hydraulics
Based on the mounting dimensions and operating conditions, we design the most suitable seal design for hydraulic cylinders as well as pneumatic devices. We will select the most suitable profile and material and we can also manufacture the seals directly.

What we can solve:
When designing seals for hydraulics, we take into account both the building space and the specific operating conditions and demands of the application. These include working pressure, temperature, displacement speed, but also the chemical environment, the quality of the functional surfaces and other sub-parameters. According to these input data, we can select the most suitable sealing profiles and materials. We have many years of experience in the design and manufacture of seals and can therefore also deal with atypical situations and specific requirements. We also manufacture the seals ourselves by CNC machining and can deliver the designed hydraulic seals completely within a short time. These sealing elements and materials are mainly:
What materials do we work with when designing seals for hydraulic cylinders?
For the production of seals we use top quality materials of proven quality. We offer more than 80 material variants and can therefore select the ideal material for your specific operating conditions. We keep the basic materials in stock so that we can not only design but also manufacture the required seals quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the key parameters for a proper seal design?
The design of the hydraulic seal is mainly influenced by the following parameters:
- operating pressure and its progression (smooth running vs. shock pressure changes, etc.)
- operating temperature
- hydraulic cylinder travel speed
- chemical environment of the application
- type of cylinder medium
- groove design
How to choose the right gasket material?
The choice of the optimum material always depends on the operating conditions. For example, H-PU is suitable for higher loads, NBR is a cheaper option in cases with lower pressure and operating temperature. For high temperature and chemical environments, FPM (Viton) is used. PTFE (Teflon) and its variants with fillers, are mainly used due to their excellent sliding properties and temperature and chemical resistance.
How does pressure affect the function and choice of hydraulic seal?
Higher operating pressure increases the risk of deformation and extrusion of the material into the sealing groove. For this reason, specially designed profiles or profile variants with an added retaining ring are used for higher pressures. For example, a conventional H-PU cuff is suitable for working pressures up to 400 bar. The addition of a retaining ring increases the usability up to 750 bar.
How to properly design the groove for the gasket?
The design of the groove for the gasket must correspond to the selected gasket type and follow the design standards. It is important that the correct dimensional tolerances are maintained, as well as the ideal roughness of the piston rod or cylinder functional surface.
What effect does the quality of the building surface have on the seal?
The quality of the surface of the bay fundamentally influences the function of the hydraulic seal and its service life. A surface that is too rough or mechanically damaged causes excessive friction and significantly increases seal wear. On the other hand, too smooth a surface can in some cases impair the lubrication function. Surface hardness is also very important for rotating applications. The higher the circumferential speed, the higher the hardness of the functional surfaces must be.
How to extend the life of the hydraulic seal?
Above all by regular cylinder maintenance, correct oil filtration (and change if necessary) and observing the operating conditions. Mechanical damage to the piston rod must be avoided.
